May 27 1816: Byron and Shelley Meet

On May 27 1816, Lord Byron meets Percy Shelley for the first time. Byron also meets Claire Clairmont, pregnant with his child, and Mary Godwin. He met the latter two in England. John Polidori describes Shelley thus: “P[ercy] S[helley], the author of Queen Mab, came ; bashful, shy, consumptive; twenty-six [actually 23]; separated from his wife ; keeps the two daughters of Godwin, who practise his theories …”
