December 28 1815: Valuation of Lord Byron’s Library

On December 28 1815, John Murray receives a valuation for the contents of Lord Byron’s library. Byron is being pressed by bailiffs to sell his library to pay off his debts. The valuation is provided by a certain Mr. Cochrane who writes:

“Mr. Cochrane presents respectful compliments to Mr. Murray, and begs to inform him that upon carefully inspecting the books in Skinner Street, he judges the fair value of them to be £450.”
